Projects on forestry and environment were evaluated at the Anual In-House Review (AIHR) by the DENR-Ecosystems Research and Development Service (DENR-ERDS) V on August 18-19, 2009 at the DENR Multi-purpose Hall in Rawis, Legazpi City. There were 11projects under the various banner programs implemented by the the DENR-ERDS V, namely: Vulnerability Assessment of Critical Watersheds in the Bicol Region; Assessment of Carrying Capacity of Various Sites for Ecotourism; Resource Conservation and Sustainable Development, Rehabilitation and Ecological Restoration of Marginal and Degraded Landscapes and Seascapes; Development of Strategies for the Production of Good Quality Planting Materials; Adaptation Strategies to Climate Change Impacts on Upland and Coastal Ecosystems; and Survey, Inventory and Documentation of Selected Biofuel Species. Three of these 11 projects presented have already been completed. One development project on agroforestry was likewise presented, highlighting the technical assistance provided by ERDS to the DENR-Forestry Service on the implementation of the Tao Kalikasan Foundation Phil. Inc. (TKFPI) Agroforestry Expansion Project in Labo, Camarines Norte.. Prieto Diaz, Sorsogon, the project site of the study entitled, "Adaptation Strategies on Climate Change Impacts to the Coastal Ecosystems" was selected by the evaluators for field validation during the second day of evaluation. The panel of evaluators consisted of experts on forestry, social science, environmental science, community development, statistics and Gender and Development (GAD) from the Ecosystems Research and Development Bureau (ERDB) and the Philippine Council for Agriculture and Resources Research and Development (PCARRD). The commodity focus of projects presented fall under national wood and production forest; protected areas and wildlife; environment services and management, and agro-forestry and multipurpose free shrubs. There was no selection on best paper; however, the study entitled "Determination of Carrying Capacity of Mayon Volcano Natural Park for Ecotourism" was pre-selected and presented for the Agriculture, Forestry, and natural Resources (AFNR) sector at the Regional Research and Development Symposium, which was conducted at Partido University, Goa, Camarines Sur last August 13, 2009. The activity was attended by ten researchers from DENR-Planning and Management Division, evaluators from PCCARD and other support staff. DENR V Regional Executive Director, Joselin Marcus Fragada was present during the opening program to welcome guests and to share an inspiring message. The In-House Review conducted annually by DENR-ERDS V to review the substantive quality of projects being implemented; to identify research gaps; to recommend information for dessimination; and to identify technologies for adaptation or commercialization (ABRanara).
